The 3 gifts of Self-reflection

In the past few years as a practitioner coach, I’ve had the good fortune of having coaching conversations with a wide spectrum of people within the corporate world; ranging from senior leaders, new managers and recent graduates.

While each conversation was very different and insightful, can you guess which one was the most challenging group to coach?

It’s none of the categories mentioned earlier! ???? ….. the toughest to coach were those who didn’t reflect on themselves!

Self-reflection is about taking the time to pause, think and understand your thoughts, beliefs, feelings, behaviors, actions, inspirations, values, and desires …..

The Power of reflection gifts you 3 powerful instruments…

  1. A magnifying lens: Our thoughts & emotions can easily cloud our judgement, making us lose sight of what truly is important. Our minds can either bloat or cloak the significance of each of these elements. Use the magnifying lens of self-reflection, take a step back to gain perspective on what matters and separate the wheat from the chaff.
  2. A phone connecting your 3 brains: Sometimes the wiring across our 3 brains — head, heart and gut — gets muddled ???? and so we have a deadlock situation where all 3 are saying different things, making it difficult to make a decision.. Use the phone of self-reflection to re-configure the 3 brains to help you make better decisions.
  3. A compass for your growth: Life moves by so quickly that it’s easy to get caught up in simply going from one thing to the next, without considering what valuable lessons we may have learnt. Use the compass of self-reflection to enable you to evaluate your experiences, and recalibrate the direction towards growth and a more meaningful life.

The way we experience the world around us is a direct reflection of the world within us’ — Gabrielle Bernstein
