How can you transition from a good manager to a great manager?

In today's world, there are managers in every sector of the business who are responsible to help their organisation in achieving success. For this to happen, the manager first needs to be successful in his or her own domain to make the organisation grow. A good manager can have time management quality, communication skills, etc but to become a great manager he must have certain qualities which will ensure not only his own success but the success of his organisation also.

So, what are those qualities?

Let’s see in details few of the most important qualities that qualify to be the top 5 desirable qualities Managers must have.

1. Have a vision

Vision is the key to success. One should have a clear vision from the beginning and work towards achieving it. A successful manager has a vision for the better functioning of his team aligned with the vision statement of the organisation. The vision should include growth of his team and team members, scaling up of business or services, aligning the process such that it impacts the overall revenue of the organisation and above all, create a culture of growth and development. The manager should be strongly committed in achieving his vision and ensure that the team also follows the same. He should always motivate and energizes people to make it work and achieve excellence. The vision statement should be brief and sum up the purpose of your team to make it memorable and inspirational. It's important for each team member to clearly understand the vision so that it also helps them to succeed within the company. One who has vision aligned with a purpose is sure to achieve great results.

2. Motivate the Team

Getting the most out of the people you work with is a key function of management. In order to achieve this, one should constantly keep the team motivated and ensure that there is a proper work balance maintained at the workplace.

“No matter what part of business you are in, you have to get things done through people,” Crant says. Employees are a company’s greatest asset, and good organizations will think of ways to maximize the return on their investment. People who make it to the top are those who are effectively able to influence others, persuade and motivate.

Ways to motivate your team:

  • Demonstrate and cultivate respect
  • Setting targets
  • Organizing workshops
  • Praising them for good work
  • Be fair to each team member
  • Maintain a healthy work environment

3. Spread Positivity

Prioritizing employee engagement is not only vital, but it’s also relatively simple to execute. One can maintain a positive environment at the workplace by communicating with the colleagues, taking the responsibility for their actions and in particular- their failure, greeting with a smile, ensuring proper work allocation etc. One should not feel like they are working in a negative environment which will affect their mental health and the desired results won't be achieved.

Therefore, spreading and maintaining positivity is very important at the workplace.

4. Avoid Micromanagement

It’s hard watching someone make mistakes, especially if you already know how to avoid them. Micromanagement in easy words can be explained as someone trying to personally control and monitor everything in a team, situation, or place. This usually results in the manager losing track of the larger picture and annoying the team by being overly-controlling.

Cons of Micromanagement:

  • It annoys employees
  • Damages employee trust
  • Can be vulnerable to human error on both sides
  • Isn’t scalable at all
  • Makes managers lose sight of the big picture
  • Leads to burnout in managers and teams alike

Micromanaging can erode worker initiative and damage employee motivation. It is said that "Teams with great managers are happier and more productive", so in order to make it work, your team should have faith and trust in you and vice versa.

5. Look for the big picture

To look for the big picture is to maintain the vision. The strategy to be successful at any single project is to visualize in your head what it looks like when the project is completed. This will give a rough idea in your mind and will help you to work towards it. Traditionally, management philosophies focused on the executive leaders, asking them to lead with vision. One thing that great leaders do well is creating a big picture vision that’s within their organization’s means. For instance, startup leaders must know what their product is and equally important to know what it is not. Sometimes the terminology of “big picture” can confuse inexperienced managers to think that they need to conquer Himalaya!
